Overview

About a 2h30 drive from Marrakech takes you to Essaouira, the laid-back Atlantic port city once known as Mogador. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, it's known as the "City of Winds" for the steady Atlantic breeze that blows through it year-round. Its ochre-stone ramparts, maze-like medina with blue doors, colorful fishing port and contemporary art galleries give it a character all its own. Local artisans work thuya wood — a rare timber from the Atlas forests — into fine marquetry boxes and trays, and the town's 3km beach is a well-known kitesurfing spot.

Known for its fresh seafood, artisanal woodwork and constant sea breeze, Essaouira offers a completely different atmosphere from Marrakech: relaxed, maritime and full of character — a full-day excursion built around wandering, not rushing.

Best Time to Visit

Essaouira has a mild, Atlantic climate year-round, making it a pleasant escape from Marrakech's summer heat. It can be breezy at any time of year, which is part of its charm (and why it's a renowned windsurfing and kitesurfing destination). Spring and early autumn bring the calmest weather for a comfortable day of walking around the medina and along the ramparts; summer brings stronger winds, great for the beach but worth knowing if you'd rather a calmer stroll.
