Overview

Imlil, at 1,740 meters in the Toubkal massif, is the favorite starting point for mountain lovers. This authentic Berber village, surrounded by century-old walnut trees, terraced fields and snow-capped peaks, offers a complete change of scenery just 1.5 hours from Marrakech. Sweeping views of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa, await, along with encounters with local residents as you pass through the douars of Aroumd and Tamatert and take in the Berber mountain culture.

Itinerary ≈ 10.5h round trip

1. 8:00Depart from Marrakech 1h drive — Pickup at your accommodation and drive southwest through the plains of the Haouz and olive groves.
2. 9:00Asni 45 min drive — Small mountain village (1,100m) at the confluence of two rivers, about 47 km from Marrakech.
3. 9:45Arrive in Imlil — Winding road through increasingly wild scenery to this Berber village at 1,740m, gateway to the Toubkal massif.
4. 10:00Walk through the village 30 min — Stroll through Imlil's lanes, meet local residents, and see the terraced fields of potatoes, carrots and century-old walnut trees.
5. 10:45Aroumd or Tamatert douar 1h round trip — Short walk from the village to the trailhead, then on to one of these Berber villages for exceptional panoramas over Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), with a view of the Kasbah du Toubkal.
6. 12:00Lunch in Imlil 1h30 — Back to the village, then free time to choose one of several cafés or restaurants, at your own pace and budget.
7. 16:30Drive back to Marrakech 1h30 drive — Departure from Imlil (16:30, or 17:00 depending on the group's pace) for the drive back.
8. ≈18:00Arrival in Marrakech — Back at your accommodation, end of the excursion.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking around Imlil and its surrounding douars. In winter, snow often covers the peaks around Toubkal, creating a spectacular landscape, though mountain roads and trails can occasionally be affected by snow or ice, so this excursion is best confirmed closer to the date during that season. Summer is a great way to escape the heat of Marrakech in the cooler mountain air.
